Internet vs. no internet
Ugh. So I've realized lately just how badly internet distracts me when I'm trying to write. O_O I would get SO MUCH more done without it! Maybe I should start switching it off?
What about you guys?

Re: Internet vs. no internet
I've tried that before, but every time I do, I end up having to turn it back on for writing purposes. I'm writing a fantasy that's supposed to have an Old World feel, so I can't use anything too distinctly modern, or with roots in something that my history doesn't have, like airplanes or guns. This requires trips to the etymology website, which, funnily enough, requires internet to work. It would really help me write if the internet was inaccessible, but that would limit my period vocabulary and random spurts of research just to keep my facts straight.
But if you're writing contemporary, or something that you've already done as much possible research on as possible, go for it! It'd probably increase productivity exponentially.

Re: Internet vs. no internet
I have certain websites I go on (mostly blogs) and I check them in the mornings so when I'm writing, I might go to check them but there's never anything new on there so it's just like a few second break. I look at it as taking a short pause from the world that I'm writing, and I tend to need it if I do. (I'm like soo OCD when it comes to writing, if I start writing then I have to write at least 1,000 words before I go to sleep, which gets the novel done quickly but I spend wayy to much time writing). If your writing and then moving to the Internet and spending more than say 8 minutes on it, then maybe turning it off is a good thing to try, but I agree with what Amanda said too

Sacrilege!!! There is no such thing as too much time writing!Sarah wrote:"if I start writing then I have to write at least 1,000 words before I go to sleep, which gets the novel done quickly but I spend wayy to much time writing"
Re: Internet vs. no internet
lol, you're actually the first person that's ever said that, my family would strongly disagree. I love writing so much, and I don't write very long, like if I'm really in the zone I can write about 2k in an hour, so it's not too much time

@Amanda I know exactly what you mean about research! I write fantasy too and I'm always looking up words and history and info (like once I had to look up info on old ships, and old castles ... things like that).
@Sarah Man! I wish I could get so far in the zone that I write so much. I have to be so careful not to let myself burn out so I usually limit myself to a chapter at most, and make sure I have a cliff hanger so I'm excited to pick it up again. For me, I've dropped so many projects I'm always afraid I will drop what I'm working on at the moment. O.O

I've stopped a project for a week once because I just stopped in the middle of a boring part, but I've never completely stopped doing a project before.... Hmm, I think it's because I tell everyone in my family that I'm writing a book and it will be done by a certain date, so I can't ever really stop a project

I am intensely jealous of that skill. And yes, it's a skill! Can you teach me that?
Re: Internet vs. no internet
Yep alright, step one: find a very important person that you respect a lot. Step two: tell them you're writing a novel. Step three: tell them the date it will be done by. Step four: offer to give them the novel on that date. Step five: write
It's very stressful, but at least it holds you accountable and you can't not finish it after that.

Re: Internet vs. no internet
Internet really makes it difficult for me to write too. Twitter has been taking over my life lately! I NEED to get away from it lol. I'm in desperate need of a LONG road trip so I can actually get something done. Either that or I'm thinking of taking a trip to the lake so there'll be no internet access. :]

Re: Internet vs. no internet
LOL Shahira! Yeah, a lake sounds PERFECT. Or a road trip. I need to get out too, actually. *sigh*
Re: Internet vs. no internet
The lake does sound perfect. Now I'll need to go there soon lol. I'm at home WAY too much.

Re: Internet vs. no internet
Ha! Me too. And if I'm not home it's because I'm doing something not-so-fun like working or going to class or running errands. :\
Re: Internet vs. no internet
You totally got this from me, didn't you, Lizzy? (Yes, I'm still writing like mad today. Just taking a quick break.)
