Filling in the middle

Post  Maggie on Sat Mar 26, 2011 10:43 pm

Ok...so this is one of the places I struggle most. I'm half looking for advice because I think I'm going to reach a point like this kind of soon in my WIP.

Do you ever not know what to put in your story to slow down the nearness of the ending? If you like at 18 chapters and not very many words to finish it, but you don't know what else could happen before you wrap it up? What do you do? Do you think of a new sub-plot or do you sidetrack your characters and delay a bit? How do you keep things from getting boring?

When I know the ending is coming and I want to slow it down I always put in a twist. Just like I did with my last novel and that's what I'm doing with this one Smile this one had a straight forward ending that was really exciting and everything but I wanted there to be something more to it so I created an extra problem for them, and an almost death, which is always fun Very Happy I've kept the ending the same but now on top of the ending they have to get through the problem Smile Normally the twist just comes to me when I get to the ending (it's never originally planned) hope this maybe helped Smile

Like Sarah said, you can add a twist, or maybe some drama that comes up. Something that needs to be fixed before the ending. :]
