Scrivener's keeping me accountable!! Empty Scrivener's keeping me accountable!!

Post  Maggie Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:18 pm

Ok so I just got the new version of Scrivener (yeah, it's what I use to write) and it has this AMAZING feature where you can set a deadline for yourself, and an amount of words you want your WIP to be (i.e 80,000). Then Scrivener will estimate how many words you need to write each day, tells you how many you have already written!!

I am SO EXCITED! I set my deadline for May 30th 2011. That's when I want to finish the novel. Here's a screenshot.

Did I mention I was excited???

(that's my current WIP...as you can see, I haven't written today Razz )

Ooh! That's so cool! I've never used Scrivener before...is it better than Pages/Word? I may have to see if it's available for iPad. Very Happy

I know!! I'm totally geeking out. This is EXACTLY what I've needed to hold myself accountable!

Scrivener is available for "Mac" so I don't know if that includes iPads or not. It's $45 but once one person buys it and they have their code you can use that same code on any other computer in the family, so it's a great investment.

Personally, I love it better than Word and I used to be a huge Word fan! Because all your chapters are in one place and there are places for notes and all sorts of crazy awesome stuff, it just works really well for novels! It's literally my novel in one place-- notes, pictures, chapters, revisions, edits...all of that. So I would never go back unless I absolutely had to.

You should download the trial and give it a try.

Speaking of iPads, did yours come then!?

That's sounds really cool! Unfortunately, it's not available for iPad...yet.

My iPad arrived yesterday! It's taking a lot of getting used to, though. And the Pages app doesn't have comments or tracking changes, which is mostly what I need it for, so right now, it's only helping me in the portable writing department...and in wasting time. I found this ridiculously cool game called Drawn, and I think I'm in love. Razz

It also doesn't support Flash, since all of the newer websites use other devices that don't slow down the machine. But that means my online classes (older material) have activities and videos that won't show. Sad Generally, I like it, but it doesn't replace a computer.

Oh, and my right pointer finger is getting bruised, because I haven't adjusted to non-tactile/springloaded keys yet. I keep hitting the screen too hard! Very Happy In the end, I think I'll end up getting a wireless keyboard.

Wow!! That's crazy. I think I'd need a few weeks to get used to an iPad! haha. Do you keep missing a regular computer? xD

Yeah, that's one of the main things I'm afraid would happen if I had an iPad -- I'd get addicted to the GAMES! But I also hate the keyboard. I was typing on my dad's and I just...ehhh...I like real keys under my fingers! Very Happy

I hope it works out for you! Hehe.

Bummer about Scrivener though. Sad I don't know what I'd do without, honestly.

The thing I miss most are the arrow keys. I never knew how much I used them until I didn't have them. It's just taking a while to adjust to this finger-pointing for the cursor. Very Happy I still have my desktop for hardcore work, and it really couldn't be replaced, but I love the portability of the iPad. It's not a nuisance to carry, at all--I can actually take it wherever I go.

I went on the reviews for Pages and suggested that they integrate comments and track changes into the next update, so I'm really hoping they do. Part of the reason I got this was so I could edit on the go. Smile

Wow! I never thought about how much I use arrow keys, either. The point thing on any touch screen drives me nuts because I always feel like my finger is too big to get the curser where I want it to go. ^^ I also have trouble getting used to the tap to select feature rather than click and drag.

Yeah, it must be really easy to bring everywhere! I love how you like to edit. You want to do all the edits I have to do? Razz

Oh, I didn't know Scrivener could do that!! Where do I find it, Lizzy? Where?!!
Yeah... Scrivener is AMAZING. I love it.
And iPads are amazing... I want one. I think I'm gonna buy one this summer, if I have any money left after putting aside for my plane ticket. *Hopeful*

But I read a article by the Scrivener guy about Scrivener on the iPad––basically, it probably won't happen, because there are only a couple people behind Scrivener, and if they focused on making a Scrivener for the iPad, they wouldn't work on improving Scrivener for Mac.
But I read that several months ago, and when I read it it was already several months old, so... Things might be different now. Razz

@WriteSpinner I'm so glad there's another Scriv user! And that feature is available for the NEW Scrivener, version 2.0 I think?

But when you have scrivener open, just go to the menu on the very tippy top of your screen, click Scrivener > Check for Updates... and it should pop up a box about the NEW version of Scrivener.

If you already have the new one, then you can find that word count thingy under (tippy-top menu) Project > Show Project Targets -- from there, a little box will open and you can customize your deadline you want and how many words you want your WIP to be, roughly. It does the rest!

That's a bummer about the iPad though. Sad

I found it! It's pretty sweet.
...But what happens if you don't make the deadline? *gasp* Does it delete everything as punishment?! Razz
And-and-and! I found a name generator too. I might've swooned just a tiny bit.

Anyway. I found this! Here's the link. It's about 3/4 the way down(Sync With Mobile Apps):
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
"Take your work with you on your iPad or iPhone using Scrivener 2.0’s new synchronisation abilities. Scrivener can now sync with Simplenote, Index Card and apps that use Dropbox such as Notebooks and PlainText. And when you get back to your main computer, just sync again to bring your changes back into your project. You can also share RTF files with collaborators—or just edit work on a computer without Scrivener—and have the changes synced back to your project using the Sync with External Folder feature."

So, no Scrivener, but it's not a total loss! No more tears. Smile

I have no idea! Maybe an alarm goes off. xD

I totally went over my word count today. It said something like 2,060 words out of 931...hehe. xD AND, the progress bar changes color the closer you get to completing your goals! It's mesmerizing.

LOL! I love your and-and-and. Where is this name generator? Shocked *prepares to steal*

@Sarah, if you read this, look at what WriteSpinner said about the iPad!! It's not totally Scrivener, but it's something! Very Happy

That would definitely be better than it all going bye-bye. Razz

I love it when that happens!! It happened to me a couple days ago––I was only planning on writing 500, but I stayed up too late and got to 1,700. Very Happy
Hehe. Mesmerizing. Nice.

Lol! I was just typing what I would have said if this was a spoken conversation. It was the only way to translate my excitement without going all-capified on you. xD

Okay! The name generator. Go to "Edit" on your top bar in Scrivener, then down to "Writing Tools". "Name Generator" is at the bottom of the list. It's super-duper-uber awesome.
They should expand it, though. Add Irish-centric names. And Russian. And French. And Greek. And a fantasy-esque... Naming my characters is one of my FAVORITE things, so a name generator is thrilling to me, if you can't tell. Razz

Excellent! I got my point across perfectly then! Lol.
I often write things that I might say, and suddenly, in writing, it's just not okay for some reason or another. It gets all convoluted(I like that word).

So...on the topic of Scrivener...would ya'll say this is an extremely good investment, if I'm doing fine with Pages? Does it have comments and 'track changes' like Pages does? I'm seriously considering buying it for the goal feature, just to keep me on track. I like mesmerizing colors... XD

It has comments, not sure about 'track changes'.... You can download the trial before you buy it and give it a try, see if you like it. xD

The goal feature is what made me decide to upgrade to the new one, because I'm a creature of habit and I don't like changes much. I was used to the old Scriv so it was a stretch to get the new one, but I'm SO glad I did!!

Yeah. Scriv has all sorts of cool features. Like the name generator, and the section specifically for character sheets. I mean, there are a couple of things I didn't like––I was really confused and overwhelmed by everything at first, but after you do the tutorial and play around, the confusion becomes "Oooh, this is so easy and amazing!" Very Happy
I don't really like the character template they provide, either... so I made my own and just transfer it over whenever I make a new Scriv file.

It has a track changes feature, but not the same type as Pages does. If you change things, you can later go back and look at an older version and compare the two to see what you changed. You can also look at the older version from before that, and the draft before that... I'm pretty sure you can see every single change all the way back to draft one. Razz
Personally, I like it better than Pages' way of doing it.

I agree with WriteSpinner. It is confusing at first, and then you're like "Wow! I'm never going back!"
