What's your setting?
Do you make up fictional towns where your story is set? & are these towns based on a real place? Or do you actually use a real place, name & all?

Re: What's your setting?
I have to invent cities because a big piece of the story I am writing is in parallel worlds
Re: What's your setting?
In my last novel everywhere the characters went was based on real places. I'd never been to any of the places but I knew names, I looked a pictures, and I even knew what roads they would take to go from place to place. The sequel to that one was mainly set in a made up town but I never mentioned the name (I thought that might throw readers after everything was based in real places) so it all depends on the story and if a real place is necessary for it.

Hahaha...I write fantasy, so, everything is made up. But when I write my urban fantasy-type deal thing, it will be set in an alternate big city that might exist someplace, but doesn't, like Gotham or Metropolis.
Re: What's your setting?
Ohhhh by far fictional! One of my favorite, favorite, FAVORITE parts of writing is the world building and making up my own place! It'll be a stretch when I finally base a story somewhere in the real world. Actually, I have already. I had a whole story set in Washington state once... and I researched all about the streets and picked homes on Google Earth and even located the nearest schools so I could be accurate for my MCs.
But usually, fictional.

Re: What's your setting?
Hm. Actually, I usually use real places.
One of my story ideas actually revolves around Texas towns––you non-Texans might not realize this, but if it's somewhere else, there's a good chance it's in Texas, too.
That one will definitely be set in real places, names and all.

@Stephen Parallel worlds? That sounds awesome! I bet it's fun making up cities for your novel. :]
@Sarah & Lizzy I think knowing those little details about the actual town your novel is placed in is really important. It makes the story that much more credible for the reader. :] But fictional towns are SO much fun to write. I totally agree, Lizzy.
@Amanda I've never written fantasy but I bet the setting is simply endless. Sounds like so much fun. :]
@Constance One of my towns is also based on a city in Texas. I used a fictional name but it's got the characteristics of where I'm currently living. The other town I use is based on Albuquerque, NM (where I grew up) but the name is just changed. :]

@Shahira: Sweet. So you just change the name? Interesting... I never really thought about doing that.

yes and no because it isn't always easy to find the names the history and the layout of a city without there being at least an opposition lol
Re: What's your setting?
@Constance & Lizzy It just makes it easier for me because I don't want to write about an actual place..but I want the characteristics to be credible. If that makes any sense?
@Stephen That sounds really tough. :/ Must take a lot of research.

Re: What's your setting?
I usually make up my own setting, just because I get to adjust places to suit the story. It's easier that way.
However I've set some of my stories in San Francisco and Ottawa before and that was a lot of research.

Re: What's your setting?
I set my stories wherever the stories need to be set. XD Really, I always come up with the story and characters first, and there's only ever one sort of place that would work for each story. Usually I end up writing fantasy or far in the future, but one project is an alternate 17th century (like...extremely alternate, but it still requires a ton of research), and I have a whole bunch of ideas that would have to be set in our world, present-time. I think those might require almost as much research as my 17th century idea, so I'm not sure if I'll ever get around to writing them. I hate research. XD But if the stories don't stop growing in my brain, they'll probably get written eventually.
Re: What's your setting?
@Maya Yeah, I bet it takes lots of research. But since I'm a lazy writer, that never happens for me..lol.
@Andre That's awesome that you write in such different eras. I bet it takes a whole lot of research.
