Music while you write? Read?
Who listens to music while they write? How about when you read?
Personally music has a pretty big impact on me. I pick soundtracks for each novel I write (Don't laugh...my latest was Hans Zimmer's "Batman" score.) I do this because then it gives me a "theme song" and a mood to jump in to whenever I write. Later, when I hear the music playing, all I can think about is my novel. Of course.
I've done the same for reading. I picked a soundtrack when I read Hunger Games for the 2nd time and now when I hear even the first few notes of the theme song I'm right back in that world with Katniss and Peeta.
How about you? Do share! Am I alone in this?

Oh, I am a total music junkie! I always have music playing whilst working. Mostly country and pop, and I admit to listening to some Justin Bieber...
Re: Music while you write? Read?
You're definitely not alone in this. Music is very important for me when I'm writing. It certainly helps with the story's mood.
I usually stick with music from soundtracks (and scores), since they're non-lyrical. But if they do have lyrics, they're musically driven nonetheless.
With my WIP, I'm listening to The Social Network's soundtrack, Radiohead's "House of Cards," and Grizzly Bear's "Slow Life."

This exact thing happens to me! It gives me the most wonderful sense of nostalgia.Lizzy wrote:I've done the same for reading. Lizzy wrote:Justin Bieber!? LOL! That's unique. Thrillers written to JB...hmm.
I swear that I listen to him because of the beats his music has. You have to admit that whoever comes up with his tracks is utterly brilliant. I hate his hair. I want to shave his head and then shrink it so it will fit through average-sized doors. (I really think the fame's gone to his head...)

Oh, and I also listen to stuff like RASCAL FLATTS, LADY ANTEBELLUM, JASON ALDEAN, JOSH TURNER, DAVID ARCHULETA, TRAIN, THE BAND PERRY, and EASTON CORBIN. So THERE, lol!

I definitely listen to music while I write! It is so inspirational! Each scene I have has its own little theme song that I listen to, sometimes while daydreaming about that particular scene in the car. Sometimes I even have little music vids in my head about my story. Lame, I know. A bit fangirlish or over-the-top? Maybe, but it gives me that drive to write.

Hans Zimmer is the best! I use his Pirates of the Caribbean tracks, and then some Howard Shore from Lord of the Rings(Return of the King & Concerning Hobbits, mostly)--I'm going to look into the Batman soundtrack for my new dark contemporary. For my current project, though, I use The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess soundtracks. The music in that game is beautiful on its own, and a lot of the tracks fit the tone of my novel. I have one song for each character, so I can get into their perspective quickly when I set out to write.Lizzy wrote:Who listens to music while they write? How about when you read?

I don't usually listen to music and read at the same time, but while I was reading The Last Battle of C.S. Lewis, Wait by The Afters was playing in the background, and those two are now eternally linked in my head. =)

Ahh! I do this!

Excellent taste! I love POTC soundtrack as well as LOTR, except the LOTR make me think of the movies so I can't link them to novels.
The whole Batman theme (Hans Zimmer's) makes me think of my latest project. It kind of makes you feel like your novel is special - almost like a movie - when you give it a "soundtrack."
I also totally love Rachel Portman's "Miss Potter" soundtrack. I used that a lot a while ago. Good stuff!
Re: Music while you write? Read?
That's really awesome how y'all have "Soundtracks" for your novels. I've never really thought of doing that.
The one composition I listen to while writing (especially poems) is River Flows In You by Yiruma. There's just something haunting & eerie about it that kind of makes me emotional &helps me right. I sound like a nut job, I know lol.
But for my recent novel I've been working on I've been listening to Taylor Swift's 'Speak Now' album. I didn't think I could work with the lyrics &all but it actually helped.

Ooh, Yiruma is awesome, too! I forgot about him--I should've checked my iTunes before I posted my response. River Flows In You is probably my favorite of his--it feels kind of sad and reflective and calm to me.Shahira wrote:That's really awesome how y'all have "Soundtracks" for your novels. I listen to epic music lol the soundtrack to Dragon Origins, especially. I even use music to get my mind out of writing lol i get so into my book that I'm currently editing that my mind won't leave my world so when I need to do something around the house, I listen to Andrew Bird. That guy's musis magic. If you every need to get your mind off of writing or something, he's the way to go lol
I also listen to relaxing, nature music while I write Dan Gibson's Solitudes are amazing!

LOVE Yiruma and "River Flows In You".
@Diana I listen to music sometimes to get my mind off writing too. If I've just been writing intensely for an hour and I'm all full of soundtrack I'll turn it off, shut my work, and listen to easy music like Jack Johnson or something.
