Where Do You Find Books
As someone preparing to release my first YA title, I'd love to hear how the teens on here find the books you read. Do you rely on blog reviews, friend recommendations, banner ads on websites, featured library titles, etc. before taking a chance on a new author/title?
Thanks guys!
Thanks guys!
Re: Where Do You Find Books
That's great!!! What's the name of the book?
For new books I go to book stores or see them featured on iBooks. In the book stores and iBooks I just look for covers that look nice or interesting and then read the back to see what it's about. I don't like to rely too much on blog reviews because everyone has their own taste but if I see a person who has a book blog and has liked a lot of the same books that I do, then I'll take the chance.

Re: Where Do You Find Books
I read the backs of books in book stores and in libraries, and then I read anything that I like
Re: Where Do You Find Books
Stephen--
Cool! Are there certain things will catch your fancy on book jackets more than others--like detailed plot descriptions or more focus on the characters, or genre descriptions, etc? What about turn-offs? (Like, for me, if I see anything mentioning a CIA or FBI agent, I usually put it back on the shelf because I've read so many bad procedurals.)
Thanks!

Re: Where Do You Find Books
I don't usually read YA, but I usually troll through bookshops looking for books I haven't seen before. The first books I pick up are usually based on the front cover and the catchy title, then if the blurb is good then I'll buy it or borrow it from the library.
Re: Where Do You Find Books
I only read books recommended by friends or authors/agents/editors/podcasters I like (I stalk Twitter a lot...and listen to several writing/publishing podcasts). Well...actually, that's not completely true. I usually find out about authors recommended etc. and then go find whatever books of theirs my library has and read one of those.
I don't browse lists or anything much...I'll browse at the bookstore or the library a lot, but I'll rarely get something if I don't recognize the author or the title. I can't even begin to keep up with the books that I have at least some guarantee are good, so I don't like to take chances and possibly waste my time with books I don't like.
*Edit*
I have no idea how that pig got there. I think I must've clicked the smiley by mistake.
...I think I'll leave it. XD

Re: Where Do You Find Books
I usually go to the book store & look in the YA section. Or I find a book I like on Amazon & go through the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought.." which helps a lot. :]

Re: Where Do You Find Books
Title and cover do a lot for me. Like in the YA section I generally won't touch anything that has a dead looking girl on the front or anything vampire/wolfish, because I'm soooo tired of the whole paranormal thing. If I get a recommendation from someone, unless they're really close and I trust their opinion, the blurb would still have to hook me before I'd actually buy and read it. (My library sucks so it's not often an option to borrow it first).
With your book as an example, if no one ever recommended it to me, I might never see it. If I got lucky while browsing and your title/cover was catchy, I would pick it up and proceed to read the flap. Because there are SO MANY books, it could be easy to overlook, unless it was a bestseller.
But yeah, title/cover has to do with a lot, unless I've had a recommendation. *looks at length of post and wonders if it was necessary to say what I just did*

Re: Where Do You Find Books
I agree with Twin. (Of course.)
Though I do more actual browsing. And I browse Amazon too. Like, related titles to books that look interesting. So... my reading list is REALLY long. I need to learn to be more selective. -_-

Re: Where Do You Find Books
You guys are totally awesome, ya know?!
I've just filled out my coverart request form, so here's hoping the art department comes up with something cool. I've seen both hit and miss covers from the publisher, so I guess we'll see. (I hope it's good, though, because how awkward a conversation would that be, telling an artist that I don't like their work. )
Thanks, guys!

Wow. That WOULD be awkward. Quite!
I think I'll start praying now that I get a really good cover artist. ^^
