YA Fantasy, Walking Shadow, 98k words

Post  Brigid on Thu Jul 21, 2011 12:34 pm

Hullo everyone! I'm Brigid and I just joined this forum today. I've been looking around for beta readers/CP's lately and haven't had any luck yet, so hopefully someone will be able to help me out!

My manuscript is titled Walking Shadow. It's a contemporary YA fantasy. (What I mean by that is, it's not epic fantasy, but it's not urban fantasy either ... although it does take place in modern times. So I'm not exactly sure how to categorize it.) It's at about 98k words at the moment.

Pitch:

Like all the women in her family, Cassandra suffers psychic abilities and visions of the Otherworld. The curse drove her mother insane, and Cassandra fears she will meet the same fate.

Jason has died in a car accident. He makes a deal with the Lord of the Underworld to get his life back––and instead, he becomes a ghost. No one can see or hear him. Everything he touches dies. And his time in the living world is limited, before he ceases to exist.

When he discovers Cassandra is the only living person who can see him, Jason pleads with her to help him. Cassandra agrees, hoping Jason might help her find a way to lift her curse.

They soon find out that their only option is to find their souls in the Underworld. If they complete the journey, Jason can get his soul back and Cassandra will lose her curse. But the Underworld is full of traps and demons, and no mortal has ever escaped. In order to survive, Cassandra and Jason must depend on each other and their abilities to determine illusion from reality.

I got the idea from a Macbeth quote ("Life's but a walking shadow...") but the story itself is more inspired by Greek mythology and by fantasy realism such as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Basically, it's about questioning the boundaries of reality by asking the question: Does believing something make it real? After all, when you're dreaming, you believe the dream is real...

I'm not picky about feedback. I'd really just like some more people to read it and tell me what they think. That is, I'm not expecting a line-by-line critique––although if anyone has that much time, I'd be ever so grateful. But really, I'd just like some over all thoughts on it. This is my sixth novel and really the only one I've stuck with for so long; I've gone through countless drafts, cut out over 70k words, but I'm still rather frustrated with it. So, any feedback at all would be appreciated greatly.

Thanks in advance! <3

Hi, Brigid! If it's not too late, I'd be happy to read over your manuscript. But since you already queried Victoria with it, I'm assuming it is. :/

Thanks Lizzy! I shall email it to you straightaway. And it's ok if it takes you a while ... I'm working on a lot of other things anyway.
