QWMRTAO Monday February 13

Post  Maggie on Mon Feb 13, 2012 10:54 am

(The title was just for you, Amanda and Renee)

QUESTION: If you bumped into an agent in an elevator, and they asked what your novel was about, what would you say? On the spot. GO!

EEK! Verbal pitches! (runs and hides)

"My latest WIP is about a girl with the ability to transform her own bioelectric field into a conscious connection with technology who travels to the capitol city to join the military, where her actions in a war against an artificial super-race of experimental human hybrids attract the attention of high-ranking transhumanist officials."

Obviously if I were to actually put myself in a situation where I'd actually find myself in an elevator with an agent, I would clean it up and, uh, change the whole thing (or at least put it into a more standard format). But you *did* say "on the spot", so...I plead the "newbie" card. Razz

I love pitching!!! I love so many things about querying. I'm gonna miss it Sad

I'm gonna answer this sorta differently, since I've been asked A LOT over the past couple days "so what's your book about" by non-writers when they learned I signed with Vickie.

"It's called Begging to Breathe, and it's about a girl whose archrival is drowned on the last day of nationals, and she must find the killer before she incriminates herself." Pretty simple. But I don't think I'd say that to an agent as a pitch . . . I haven't thought about a pitch for it, actually. Hmm. That's Vickie's job now =D

Heehee, ty. XD

And…ugh, I hate verbal anything, let alone pitches…let's see.

"My book, The Night, is an epic YA fantasy with series potential. The novel focuses on Aerael, a fifteen-year-old girl who discovers a power within herself that could overthrow the gods, or cement their rule forever. She must decide which path is the right one, sealing the fate of the world."

That's what I word-vomited up, lol, and it's probably a lot like something I would end up saying, besides, "Umm…", "Well…", and, "It's about stuff…and things." That last one is an actual quote—three years ago, I was asked by an acquaintance-friend what my book was about, when my (EX)best friend told him I had written a book. He was also someone I had a major crush on at the time. Evil or Very Mad Just kidding about the 'ex-best friend' thing, but I sent her many murderous glares and turned three million shades of red.

@Rachel LOL! I like how your pitch is all one sentence. XD And I HATE pitches, too. You did well!! Very Happy

@Taryn *HUGS* I don't think I've ever heard someone say they'd miss querying before. XD Lovely pitch, as usual. You're the queen of pitches!

@Amanda I'm so intrigued! That wasn't bad, considering it was on the post. But something tells me you've thought about it at length. Razz

@Maggie -- I was going for the "craptheagent'sgettingoffonthenextfloor" angle. Wink If I rewrote it in, uh, not one sentence, I suspect it would be a lot...nicer. Razz
