Watching Basketball Empty Watching Basketball

Post  Sarah Fri Jun 01, 2012 9:38 pm

So, I kinda hate basketball but my family loves it and watches it all the time. It got me thinking about writers who write characters who love the things they hate. Like Miranda Kenneally, author of Catching Jordan, who wrote about a character who plays football even though she didn't really know much or like football. Now I've have this idea for a character who is in to something that I have no clue about and I'm trying to figure out how to write a story that is true to her even though I'll never know as much about the topic as she's suppose to. So how do you all deal with characters who love things that you hate? Or are into things that you have no clue about?

This is really interesting! I've noticed about myself that, at least with main characters, I tend to make them enjoy something that I at least *like*, even if I'd never do it myself. Like I'd never write about a character who plays football. O_o Or basketball.

So I'm not even sure how I'd approach that. Maybe one day I'll find out?

As far as doing things that you have no clue about, then I'd say just RESEARCH like there's no tomorrow. It probably won't be very fun, but that's what I've done in the past. I don't know if I do it right, or if it comes off OK, but if you read everything you can about it and watch videos and listen to music (depending on what it is...) then you'll probably be OK.

Wow. That feels like a LOT of rambly stuff. O_o

Same here! I always make them like something I enjoy or am interested in. I've never made a character love something I've ever hated or been bored by (like sports *sends apologies to my basketball playing brother*)

That's what I figured I'd have to do, but I can already tell that I'm going to have to research a lot but at least it's something I'm interested in to a point so it won't be totally boring. Thanks for the advise! I'll just try to research the topic as much as possible and try my best to pull it all off!

Not rambling! Very helpfull advise! Very Happy

@Sarah LOL!! Luckily neither of my brothers ever played sports, so this isn't something I've had to deal with. XD *relieved*

*nod* Yeah. I mean, I can't understand writing something you aren't at least a LITTLE interested in. Or you'd be totally bored, and that defeats the purpose of writing. Razz

Good luck with it!!
