End of Summer

Post  Sarah on Thu Sep 06, 2012 6:48 pm

For most of us it's the end of summer Sad Which is the main reason for my forum absence, since the end of summer means the beginning of school for me. Sorry! Anyway, what was your favorite book this summer? Smile

Shadow & Bone! I loved loved LOVED that book! It was amazing. Uber amazing. Like…reread-it-within-a-week-of-the-first-read amazing. Except I got busy, so I didn't actually do that. But I WANTED to. I still mean to reread it very soon. Smile

I loved that book too! It was one of those books where I saw it on goodreads and went out and bought it the same day and I was not disappointed! That book is definitely in my top 5, if not my favorite book of the summer Smile

Oh, there were so many good ones. Shadow and Bone, Code Name Verity, Between Shades of Gray...but my personal favorite released book was Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I finally read it, and now I want to be Laini Taylor when I grow up. Her writing is so exquisite, and it turned me into a melting puddle of mush. *nod*

In other news, I've been practicing my fangirling this summer.

...however, in addition to those wonderful books I mentioned above, there was Another Book. A not-quite-yet released book.

It is THE ARCHIVED by Victoria Schwab, and it is a thing of gorgeously insane levels of awesome. I adored that book, and GNANAAAARFIHEIOJDSF! (<--I was like that for days after I finished it.) Basically, you all should preorder it now. It's that amazing.

Oooh, hate this question! But probably....ummmm....Insurgent? Most of my reading this summer was catching up on books/series I MEANT to finish as a child but never did. Like the Betsy+Tacy books. So it's been a lot of below-my-reading-level oldies, and not a lot of new, fresh exciting stuff. *shrug*

But OHMYGOODNESS I can't believe summer's over! It's actually not so painful for me this year because there's no back-to-school. I'm really loving this year off thing! SO much.

@Rachel What did you think of Code Name Verity? I've been thinking about buying it but I'm not sure if I'll like it or not since the summaries I've found don't tell much about it.

I tried to read the first chapter of Daughter of Smoke and Bone and couldn't get into it. Was it maybe just the first chapter and the rest of the book's really good? If so I'll have to find it again and give it another try especially since I've heard such great things about it Smile

Did you get an ARC of The Archieved? What's it about??

@Maggie I loved Insurgent so much!! I went to a book signing and everything for it, it was amazing!

I love reading oldies that I loved as a kid Very Happy You are so lucky you're taking a year off! I wish I was especially with all these school exams coming up. I plan on getting a teaching degree though so I guess I best get used to going to school every year haha

@Sarah — I loved Code Name Verity, but it's an intense story and hard to summarize (which is probably why the summaries say very little, haha). I would recommend getting it out of the library first, just in case it's not your thing—but, IMO, it's very worthwhile.

I'll play the subjectivity game with Daughter of Smoke and Bone, hehe—it's really beautifully written and I loved it, but if you're used to and prefer the snappy, action-packed books told in first person present, then it would probably be rather jarring. I think it's worth reading even if that's not your style, though, because it has some awesome worldbuilding and mythology, etc. More succinctly, it's a lovely book, but I can see how it might be hard for some to get into.

Annnnd here's a link for The Archived with a much better blurb than I could produce. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I didn't get an ARC, to my sorrow, so how I read it is kind of a long story (...nothing illegal, obviously). It's an incredible book.

Ooooh, The Archived sounds INTENSE. Very Happy *adds to growing list* I think I have like 8 books now in my Amazon cart, and more in the 'save for later' section b/c they're coming out in October. Razz Sometimes it's nice to have an elementary school teacher for a mom—she buys ALL the books and takes them to her classroom library when we're done with them, so we can say they were for her job and get tax deductions. XD

Anyway, I think subjectivity is a good card to pull for Daughter of Smoke & Bone. I read the opening on Amazon, and my impressions on the first pages were not much connection to character in the narrative + trying too hard to write pretty. idk, I love rich writing, but Laini Taylor's just felt overwrought to me—forced, I guess. Didn't have the flow of natural voice, and didn't flow from description to action/dialogue and back, so I found myself jarred out several times.

I guess I expect the flow and constant reward of something like LOTR when an author lets themselves ramble that much, and I didn't see it. It probably gets better, being that beginnings are usually over-edited, but I read some reviews that pointed out plot things that would bother me, so…I'll just read Code Name Verity and The Archived. XD Plus her name's Karou, which is totally a guy's name, and I KNOW it'll bother me the whole time. Like Hiccup in How to Train Your Dragon. XP

Speaking of Code Name Verity…the beginning is SO rambling, I almost didn't put it on my list, despite my deep, impassioned love for tragedy, but all the peoples are saying that everything comes full circle and your mind will be blown, so I shall march through. Smile

@Amanda That's awesome! My mom only buys books for my brother and sister, I have to buy my own Sad

Good to know! I might try getting past the first chapter of the book but we'll see how it goes.

Hiccup in How to Train your Dragon ended up being a girl, right? I can't remember... which is probably your point lol

Favorite books from this summer...Shadow and Bone. Cuddle Monsters. The Night. Son of Neptune. I don't think I've read anything this summer that I haven't loved, actually.

@Sarah—LOL no, I don't think Hiccup was a girl. XD He just had an annoying voice that grated on my nerves. Sounded like he was talking through his nose the whole time, and was way too world-weary for a "kid". I blame the voice actor entirely, because the movie was otherwise pretty good.

@Constance—I was about to do a happy dance that my book was in the same sentence as Shadow & Bone and Son of Neptune, but then I realized you used periods instead of commas. Crying or Very sad XP I'm quite glad that mine made it among your favorite books of the summer, anyway. XD

@Sarah—YES, okay! That makes a lot more sense, knowing you were talking about the dragon. XD I was very confused as to how Hiccup's gender could be confused. Razz The dragon's name was Toothless. I don't remember if Toothless was a boy or girl. *shrug*

Toothless was a boy, guys. THAT MOVIE WAS THE BEST, GUYS. Shocked

Ahem.

@Amanda—Right. Sorry about that. XD

@Sarah—You should! ...Though you won't find The Night or Cuddle Monsters anywhere. Those I read for pretty people, and you'd have to ask the pretty people specifically if you wanted to read them. Razz

@Amanda This is what happens when the main character of a dragon movie is named Hiccup. How are people suppose to remember that it's the name of a human? *sigh*

@Constance Huh. I really thought Toothless ended up being a girl at the end of the movie... but I've never actually watched the whole thing through, just a little part of the middle and a little part of the end so I'm probably way off on everything about it.
