How do you get your ideas for a story?

Alright question time So how does everyone get there ideas for a story? Or better yet, what's the story behind an idea for a story you got (wow I used the word story a lot) Anyway, I love when writers tell how they thought of the idea for the book they wrote so I thought this would be fun!
For me it's like I'm thinking about something and all of a sudden the question pops into my head out of nowhere (it's always out of nowhere for me, not sure why) "What would you do if this happened?" And, well, you all know the rest....

For me inspiration happens totally randomly and when I'm least expecting it. When I want a story idea to come I can't think of anything, but then when I'm randomly coasting down the isle of Walmart I'll suddenly have a mega-brainstorm.

Sometimes music inspires me. Sometimes THINGS inspire me, like if I see a construction site working on a bridge I might think of a story having to do with a bridge. That kind of thing.

My current story...hmm, I'm pretty sure I thought it up officially when I was on the road. Just looking out the window, watching what passed, and thinking. And then suddenly it just kind of CAME to me, if you know what I mean.

I love when you're doing something random & an idea pops up.

One story I started writing was from a dream I had. Another was my high school experience. But when I sit & try to think of a story, of course, it never happens lol.

A dream!? Way cool. I wish I'd have an awesome dream with a perfectly worked out plot. LOL!

It wasn't really a plot. More like one scene that happened &ended up being stuck in my head but the plot was really starting to work itself out.
You'll think I'm lame but it had to do with me sitting next to Robert Pattinson(don't laugh..haha) in a club/restaurant & he looked over at me & said, "Why aren't you screaming?" since he's famous & everyone obviously acts a fool in front of him lol. But yeah, that was the dream so I started off with that scene in a restaurant & just changed his character around some. It's unfinished but I'm always thinking about that idea, wanting to write more of it.

Oooh..I love that. I've had dreams like that, where it's somehow vividly realistic even though you've never met the person. I like how you took it and made it a scene in your book! Next time I have an awesome dream I'll do the same.

I often have dreams with celebs &they're SO vivid & real. It's crazy. But hey, I'm not complaining lol.

Yeah dreams are pretty awesome, when they make sense.

Agreed, LOL! I love dreams that are realistic like that because they make you feel like you've really had that experience, thus you can write about it "from experience"!? Almost?

I don't know. Dreams (can) rock.

Technically, it IS experience haha. I mean you DID experience the dream. It pretty much feels real. But the waking up part sucks. Like, really? I'm NOT having dinner next to Rob Pattinson?

LOL! Makes reality feel gray sometimes. If I ever have a dream with Peeta from Hunger Games in it, I think I'll cry when I wake up. *fan*

haha I don't know what this Peeta is like. Another reason I should be reading Hunger Games. Have you read Hush Hush by chance? Patch. Sa-woooon.

Peeta is absolute perfection! And after talking/thinking about him, guess who was just in my dreams last night? Yeah, weird. But WONDERFUL!!

I really need to read Hunger Games too! But I love when stories come to me in dreams, it's happened for me once or twice and it's so awesome! Unfortunately ideas don't come to me in dreams very often

Me neither, Sarah. I wish they did! It seems like such a perfect way to get inspiration. *sigh*

Lol don't you just LOVE when that happens? Last night I had a dream about Jeremy from The Vampire Diaries(the show). I couldn't complain about that one.

But yeah, I don't often have dreams that I can use as inspiration. I just usually see celebrities which is okay too.

Haha I wish I could tell you how to make it happen. I didn't even think I thought about celebrities much but apparently I'm obsessed lol. My sister's jealous because of the dream I had of Robert Pattinson haha. It's pretty funny.

I'd like Robert Pattison but not as much as Kellan Lutz, I would be jelous if you had a dream with him! (you probably already know this but he's the guy that plays Emmett in Twilight)

I don't get the whole Robert Pattinson thing. I'm a sucker for Kellan Lutz & Taylor Lautner.

I'm so Team Emmett! I don't get the Robert thing either. But Emmett was my favorite in the book, well, him and Quil. But that's cause there personalities are so similar. Did you read the deleted scene with him in it on Stephenies website? It was so good! And Kellan is my favorite actor in the whole movie! I love him!

Haha I SO get you!! Emmett's character was also my favorite because he's so playful & funny. He's like a big teddy bear..a very attractive teddy bear. Quil was pretty funny too. I love Jacob's personality though. He's not as uptight as Edward.

Emmett's for sure my favorite! I couldn't stand Edward. He was way to controlling for me! Jacob was nice, I started really liking him after Renesmee (I think I spelled that right?) cause I think that's when he really started acting like himself. I also liked Seth just cause he was so happy

I do love Edward, even though he's annoying & controlling..lol. He's just one of those guys that you can't help but to fall for because he's such a freaking gentlemen. But only in the books though. In the movies, I was really turned off.
Yeah, Jacob definitely changed after Reneesme(sp??) but I always liked that he had a dangerous side. Seth was fun because he's so young. &believe it or not, I liked Leah for her attitude.
