Terrific Tuesday ^^

Post  Maggie on Tue Mar 15, 2011 7:35 pm

Ignore the incredibly cheesy title.

What's up everyone? Getting good things done?

I feel like I haven't been around much... I had my last tutorial class before spring break today! Woohoo! I feel pounds lighter. ^^

OGT week Sad I have two finished and have three more left, and each test is more than two hours long. I'm not having fun. Luckily the teachers don't give us any other work during them so I've been getting some writing done, though not as much as I wished.

What's a tutorial class? Are you on spring break already? I can't wait until mine starts!

I'm so sorry. Sad Tests make me nervous. That sounds like my nightmare!

A tutorial is an organization of teachers that rent out a building like a church, usually, and provide classes for homeschoolers that parents might not want to / be able to teach. You go once or twice a week for the class and they give you homework for the rest of the week.

I take two classes at a tutorial and they pile me up with the homework to complete during the week. It can be a drag, but it's a good experience and it saves my parents the trouble of trying to teach me subjects like biology where you need lab equipment and dead animals to dissect. O_O

@Lizzy -- I see what you're talking about. We don't call them tutorials in our system--just regular classes. I took one for high school physics, and there were only 6-7 students. It was really fun, and I learned a lot more than I would have in a larger classroom. We had hands-on experiments and everything! Wink

My Tuesday's been going pretty well. I actually got up this morning, because I wanted to be decent for the mail-lady--my iPad was scheduled to come today. …But no one came. Sad I did get mostly caught up on my physics reading, so that's good. If I'd gotten it today, I probably would've been playing with it for a couple of hours. Very Happy

It really is! I'll be happy when it's over!

That's really cool, my cousins talked about doing something like that. They were homeschool traditionally though. I'm home schooled online so they send me a computer, science lab equipment and I have teachers for every subject. I kinda like the sound of yours though, I'd probably work just a few days to get it done and then give myself the rest of the week off Smile (wishful thinking, I know. You probably have way too much work to fit into a few days)

Aww, maybe it will come tomorrow Smile lol, yes, get all your work done now, cause once you get an iPad, you will get nothing done. It's really addicting

I'm taking one for introductory physics this year. We have hands-on experiments too. ^^ It's a good experience.

Aww, I hate when I'm waiting for a package and it doesn't come! I can't imagine waiting for an iPad. I would live by the mailbox until it came, LOL!

Sometimes the work load is easier, and I have been able to give myself a 3 or 4 day weekend from Algebra and science, at least. But there are still other courses I take at home under my parent's "teaching" (I really do it myself...) and those are what take up the free time I would gain when I finish the homework. :/

I've found out that I actually work better in a classroom situation, contrary to what I always believed about myself. You never know!

How does online school work, exactly? Do you do the work on paper and scan it so they can see it? I'm thinking of Algebra and all the graphing etc...

The online schooling is amazing, they send you everything for free, text books, lab supplies, ect. And actually send you some money for Internet. We have online tests where we do the work in front of us and just put it into the computer (the teachers don't have to see it) and some of it you scan in and send to the teachers (they provide a scanner). The algebra graphing (unless it's an assignment or a written test) would just be for yourself, like we have homework but our teachers don't see it, its just up to you to get it done.

*gapes*

That sounds so cool! There is so much that I have to turn in to my teacher -- drawings like graphs and stuff -- and things that I have to talk to her face to face about. I can't believe how simple that sounds.

Do you have to pay for the course? I can't imagine they'd send all that stuff for free... or do they really? *is amazed*

I know right, it's so easy! And the best part is that if you don't get what your learning they have these chat things called eliminate, where you can talk to the teacher and the teacher can show you and talk you through problems on your screen. It's amazing!

Lol, yup they actually send you all the stuff for free, it always feels like christmas when my books come in (I know I'm a geek, but when you get a whole knew literary book every year it's exciting Smile) you don't have to pay for any courses because what it's considered a public school online, so the state pays for all of it just like they do for traditional public schools (where you actually go to the school), and like I said before they even send you money for Internet Very Happy, and I get to do college classes for free while I'm in high school Smile

That's how my system works, though we don't get money for internet. We call 'em charter schools--basically free schooling, where you get to choose the curriculum. It's unbelievably awesome. I've taken…seven college classes now, because of it. I love the freedom! We do have a budget, though.

@Renee I've taken two college classes so far and plan to do some my Junior year and then all college classes my senoir year so by the end of high school I'll have over a year and a half of college done Smile I love my school, it's so much better than the regular school I used to go to! Mines called a charter school to except since it's a public school we have to follow the cirriculm designed for each class and do the assignments our teachers tell us. What do you mean by budget? Like you can only take so many classes?

@Sara -- Our charter schools are public as well--they're funded by the state. What I meant by free-range curriculum, is that we can take whatever electives we want. There're still the general requirements, like four Social Studies, four English, three Science, and two and a half Math year-long courses. And then the stricter requirements, like Psychology, Government, Economics…stuff like that. And yeah, we have a budget of about 1.5k, so that limits how many college classes I can take without paying for it out of pocket. They also have a computer reimbursement plan, so I get to keep my desktop at little cost to me. Very Happy

@Renee, same here, we have certain requirements for classes but they let us take whatever electives we want, which I love Smile I'm taking mostly college classes for electives, since they're requirements in college for me.

Oh I get it. I don't have that budget, I'm allowed to take as many as I want as long as I don't go over the amount of credits that are required each year, which is awesome cause I can take all college classes for my senior year Smile I don't have that computer reimbursement plan, *jelous* that is soo cool!

I know the feeling. Sad I can't wait to graduate! But at the same time college is such a big word I'm glad I'm not quite there yet.
